Lucky the duckling faced a bleak future following an accident which left one foot pointing in the wrong direction when it healed. Owner Allison Morgan decided to enlist the services of a local cobbler to aid the bird’s recovery: “I was asked if I could do the impossible and make an orthopaedic shoe for a duck. I was not sure if it was something I could help with but then I had a lightbulb moment to base the shoe around a Roman sandal.”

Afrika, the paralysed cat, with his set of wheels that enable him to walk.

Ethel was struck down by a mystery illness earlier this year which left her back legs paralysed. Vets advised owner Zoe Holbourne to have her pet put down—but she refused and searched the internet for a way to get Ethel back on her feet. She found a small American company which makes made-to-measure miniature carts for disabled animals and ordered the first one to be shipped to Britain. Ethel is now happily bounding around with the £80 contraption, which is made from toy wheels and lightweight plastic tubing.

Hoppy, the three-legged tortoise, has a mini skateboard fitted to help him get around.

And I claim to being an excellent babysitter/future mom.

But on a day worthless like chickenshit, they come in handy.
